Gladys: Weapons' Breakout Villain Gets Her Film

Gladys tells the story of the breakout character from Zach Cregger's horror hit Weapons, with cast still unannounced. Warner Bros., in theaters 8 Sept 2028.

One of the most captivating characters from the recent trend of unsettling horror films is coming back. Gladys, a prequel to Zach Cregger's Weapons, centers on Aunt Gladys's backstory, which is portrayed by Amy Madigan.

Currently scheduled for release on September 8, 2028, by New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, not much is set in stone about this project as it is still in early stages of production.

Instead of following directly on from the end of Weapons, Gladys will fill in the backstory for a character that remains largely unexplained.

Fans interested in upcoming releases may search Cocoflix app, but that should not be mistaken for an official release.

The Success of Weapons

Weapons, which was released in 2025, told the disturbing story of the unexplained disappearances of children from a small community and captured the interest of horror movie fans with it's unique use of distinctive perspectives, traumatizing imagery, and shocking revelations.

Madigan's Aunt Gladys became one of the breakout characters of the film, due to her strange appearance, unpredictable behavior and relationship to the central mystery of the film.

Madigan's character evolved to become one of the more disturbing and entertaining elements of the film, as audiences were left to draw their own conclusions as to her involvement in the central mystery.

In regard to Weapons, Zach Cregger stated that he wrote backstory for Aunt Gladys but ultimately decided to not include it, as it helped to maintain her unsettling presence.

The Prequel gives Zach an opportunity to explore the unused backstory, without simply retreading the events of Weapons.

The Story So Far

The core elements of Gladys are in place to help answer the questions of what led Aunt Gladys to be the way audiences met her in Weapons.

No one knows for sure where the movie is set or who the other characters are or what the main conflict is.

Cregger has stated that the movie contains mysteries and plot points like the first movie, which threw a lot of people off.

Balancing explanation and uncertainly is the biggest creative challenge. There's a lot of mystery around what makes a great horror antagonist and if you reveal too much that can destroy the appeal around the character.

A prequel has the potential to enhance what we already know about Aunt Gladys and hopefully give us a better understanding of why she is the way she is.

Amy Madigan is expected to come back and play Aunt Gladys. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Weapons.

Directly behind the camera things are a bit different. Zach Shields is writing the screenplay. He and Cregger developed the idea for the prequel together. Cregger is also a producer for the prequel as well as Roy Lee and Miri Yoon. Cregger is not expected to direct the prequel, however. As of October 2026 the production was reportedly holding out for a final draft of the script to be written before they picked a director.

There is no confirmed cast or production schedule.

There are a lot of mysteries surrounding the world of Weapons and a successful character-centered prequel could help expand the Weapons universe and answer some of the unresolved mysteries without requiring a traditional sequel. The first film showed us that the world is large enough to support a lot of characters while still having a centralized overarching mystery.

Gladys has the potential to build on its storytelling approach by looking at a different part of the character's life.

While audiences should learn to distinguish between rumors and true production announcements, additional plot points such as a connection to other supernatural projects, or the possible introduction of more characters from Weapons, remain speculation at this point.

While the strongest opportunity for Gladys may be to create a stand-alone story, one that is deeper and extends the original but isn't fully dependent on it, that may not be the case. Only time and official releases will tell.

This film has an official release date from Warner Bros. It's currently scheduled to release in theaters on September 8th, 2028, but that may change.

The most noteworthy announcements in the future will be the completion of the screenplay and the director's selection, along with the rest of the cast, and the beginning of principal photography.

Currently, there is no official word on home releases or streaming releases.

An unrelated search, Cocoflix Apk download, does not mean the movie will be released through that service or any service for that matter.

The most noteworthy and official sources of news remain Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema.

Gladys is an example of an interesting concept in horror, the creation of a prequel devoted to exploring a villain in order to shed light on the mystery that helps create their allure.
